INTERFACIAL STRUCTURE AND PHASE REACTION IN SiC/NiCr ALLOY JOINT

Bonding of SiC to SiC using Ni and Ni - 25at%Cr foils was performed at high temperature.Interface structures and reaction phases were investigated by EPMA analyses and XRD diffraction method, re- spectively. At a bonding temperature of 1273K Ni reacts with SiC and forms various Ni silicides con- taining graphite baside SiC. Ni3Si without graphite was formed at Ni side.The interface structure of SiC/Ni joint was SiC/Ni2Si + C/Ni31 Si12 + G/Ni3 Si/Ni. At the interface between SiC and Ni- 25at%Cr alloy the Ni silicide was only Ni2Si at the same bonding temperature,and further(Cr, Ni)7 (Si, C)3 carbide was formed between Ni silicide + graphite zone and Ni - 25at%Cr alloy.The interface structure of SiC/Ni - 25at%Cr alloy was SiC/Ni2Si + C/(Cr, Ni)7 (Si, C)3+Ni(ss. Cr, Si)/Ni - 25at%Cr.

Initial process is influenced by substrate microstructure according to the study of initial stage of electroless plating on low carbon steel and pure iron. For low carbon steels, depositing on cementite is prior to that on ferrite, and for pure iron, the grain boundaries and some favourable grains are deposited more easily. The initial reactions of electroless depositing of Ni-P alloy have been tentatively proposed

Comparison of K_(IC) Values for SiC Whisker Reinforced Ceramic Composites Obtained by Using Various Methods

The fracture toughness (KIC) values determined by indentation microfracture method (IM ) for SiC whisker reinforced Al2O3 and ZrO2 based composites were calculated with different IM equations and compared with those obtained by singte edge notched beam (SENB) technique. Experimental results show that the KIC (IM) values calculated with different equations are quite different one from another. For composites without phase transformable components the KIC (IM) and KIC (SENB) values are practically on the same level, but for composites with phase transformable components (partially stabilized zirconia) the KIC (SENB) values are always higher than KIC (IM). This is because that the IM method can not reveal sensitively the toughening effect due to dynamic t-m transformation of ZrO2 as the SENB method does. The accuracy of the IM method depends on the Suitability of the IM equations and was evaluated for the materials used in this investigation. Two new IM equations are suggested with which the KIC (IM ) values can be obtained very close to KIC (SENB) values for composites having phase transformable components.

Detailed crystallographic analysis has been undertaken on the various combinations Of 24 martensite variants in the 18R martensite of a Cu-Zn-Al shape memory alloy. Based upon the calculated crystallographic data, the interface energy of different twin interfaces was calculated using a lowangle-grain-interface model. For the variant/variant pairs in a self-accommodating group. the A/C type and A/B type interfaces have low interface energy, and A/D type interface is an intermediate one. In contrast, the intervariant interfaces that belong to different plate groups have high intrface energy. The calculated results are consiStent with the previous observations of the mobility of intervariant interfaces.

Mechanically alloyed Al-4.9Ni-4.9Ti powders were prepared by milling mixed aluminium, titanium and nickel powders, and then consolidated by hot hydrostatic extrusion. The microstructures of milled powders and extruded bars were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission eIectron microscopy observation. The results show that mechanical alloying and consolidating processes have great effects on the microstructures and mechanical properties of extruded materials. Polycrystalline materials having an ultrafine grain size may be prepared by mechanical alloying. The strength and thermal stability are improved with the increasing of processing time of mechanical alloying, since grain size decreases and volume fraction of dispersoids increases as milling time increased

Studies on the mechanical behaviour of squeeze-cast SiCw / Al composites have been revjewed. The results show that SiCw / Al composites exhibit improved mechan ical properties and cyclic hard ening. The reasons leading to the above results are discussed. Localized deformation near SiC whiskers plays an important role in the initiation of microcracks in the composites, and the fracture of the composites is caused by the abrupt linking of microcracks

Al-4.9 Fe-4.9 Ni alloy powders have been synthesized by mechanical alloying. The rnechanically alloyed powders are consolidated by hot hydrostatic extrusion. The results show that extrusion tempereture. extrusion ratio and lubricant have great effects on the quality of extruded rods and their mechanical properties, The mixture of graphite and glass powders as lubricant can prevent the oxidization of cold compacted billet by cladding the billet with this lubricant before heating. This technique greatly simplifies the conventional densification process of powders

Influence of Deformation and Heat Treatment on Seawater Corrosion of 70Cu-30Ni Alloy

After deformed and annealed, 70Cu-30Ni alloy with irrecrystallization or incomplete recrystallization mainly consisting of deformed grains displayed unstable E.(corrosion potential) and low Rp (polarization resistance) in 3.5%NaCl, and corrosion product film contained a lot of seawater species in the outer layer and denickelified in the inner layer immersed in seawater for 3 and 6 months, and intergranular corrosion occurred in the matrix. With the increase of deformation and annealing temperature, the anodic oxide film formed by polarization in artificial seawater was increasingly stable. The recrystallized alloy was stable in Ec and high in Rp and its corrosion product film formed in seawater was uniform and rich in Ni.
